A song about the journey of St Matthew, from tax collector to disciple, from follower to leader. Matthew began life as Levi, who was a tax collector when Jesus called him to leave everything, including his wealth, behind. And Jesus’ call to Matthew was quite deliberate. The tax collector’s were outsiders in Jewish society, reviled for their co-operation with the Romans. But Jesus “came to call the lost ones”.

So Matthew turned to become a humble follower of Jesus, even changing his name to reveal his change of heart and change of mind.

Following, Jesus death and resurrection, Matthew continued his journey from follower to leader, taking the story of Jesus to various parts of the then known world, before meeting a martyr’s death.

The story of St Matthew is a valuable one for children. In their younger years they are called to follow Jesus, but as they grow in faith, they are called on to be leaders, just as Matthew was first a follower but his love for Jesus enabled him to transform from to become an early leader of the church.
